Mood board: Why designers love them!

Designers create mood boards to communicate the look and feel we want to achieve by the end of the project. It can represent more than one room on one board. Multiple items are included on the board to explain the proposed design to the client, and these items are divided into three sections:

1. Inspiration image(s):

This image will represent the style of the room and show the general look and feel we want to create. It is used as a guideline for both the designer and the client. If the client dislikes the image, we know that we are on the wrong track with the design brief. The client can point out their likes and dislikes on the image which then further guides the designer to create the perfect space for the client.

2. Colours and textures:

The look and feel of the room is further communicated through the colours and textures on the board. They are usually grouped in one spot on the board, and include paint colours, floor finishes, fabrics, cupboard finishes, etc.

3. Furniture and accessories:

All accessories, from furniture to lighting to artwork, are shown in this section. This will provide the client with an overall look of the room without seeing the final space. This section also guides us when we need to order the accessories from the appropriate vendors and send designs through to the manufacturers.
